Zolv reaps rewards of Bike to Work scheme

Leeds based software design and web development company, Zolv, has set the wheels in motion to reduce the company's carbon emissions by taking part in the government's Bike to Work scheme.

More than fifty per cent of the Zolv team have now swapped their cars for bikes as part of a government subsidised initiative that gives employees a chance to buy a tax free bike for use on their journey to and from work.

Zolv employees were previously emitting more than 300g of carbon per kilometre as they made their way through busy Leeds city centre traffic on the way to work. Since they started cycling, Zolv's Bike to Work team has saved several thousand tonnes of carbon and the company has reported a number of other benefits.

Olly Wenn, Zolv managing director, said of the scheme: "It is good to feel that, as a company, we are doing our bit to help the environment, but participating in the scheme has also benefited our business. Staff are now healthier, more alert and often more punctual, as their journey to work is no longer dependent on unpredictable traffic conditions."

"A number of our team members already cycled in to work but participating in the Bike to Work initiative has encouraged a number of others to leave their cars in the garage. We hope to be able to include more people in the scheme in the future."

As part of the scheme, Zolv teamed up with Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Operative, which has been working with employers on the Bike to Work scheme since 2004 and provided the bicycles for the initiative.
